Francesca and Dolaine mount
the loom for three-warp velvet
The
Foundation was established for the study of traditional weaving techniques and methods with the main focus of research on velvets.
Historians and technical experts have contributed to the weaving
at the Foundation of the following
velvets:
- Velvets with precious bouclé
effects as produced in the Renaissance
- Velvets, with gold and silver brocade
- Contresemplé velvets, produced as early as the
17th century
- Poil traînant velvets.
- Peluche velvets in silk.
Other fabrics woven:
- Samites and taquetés with three or four wefts.
- Silk chenille brocaded lampas with a warp mounted on a
bobbin creel.
Reproduction
The restoration of old interiors frequently requires the exact
reproduction of old textiles. The Fondazione, after a detailed
study of an original sample, can weave velvets, lampasses and
brocades adopting ancient techniques to faithfully reproduce
the original designs.
- Brocade
"Duomo", from a mid eighteenth-century chasuble
in the Cathedral of Florence.
- Brocade "Santa Maria del
Fiore" from a cassock in the Cathedral of Florence
c. 1730.
Design
The knowledge gained from experimentation and research is also
used to design new fabrics. The combination of old techniques
with modern designs creates a wide variety of fascinating results.
The superb quality of these fabrics, produced in small quantities
makes them ideally suited to haute-couture.
- Silk peluche degradé for Versace.
- Silk chenille brocade with gold ground woven on a specially
constructed loom for Fendi.
