The aim of the course is to provide students with the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to understand and experiment with the weaving technique explored, enhancing local resources and traditional methods, while fostering a dialogue between art and craftsmanship through hands-on practice and creative experimentation.

At the end of the course, students will have acquired the following skills:

  • Understanding the characteristics of local wool and selecting it for their own project
  • Applying traditional rethreading techniques typical of folk weaving in Central Italy
  • Contributing to the creation of a collective artwork by integrating individual research
  • Recognising weaving as cultural heritage and understanding its relationship with local resources

Student-provided materials:

Squared notebook, pencil and pen, measuring tape (tailor’s tape), scissors.

Masterclass: Folk Weaving in a Contemporary Artistic Perspective

The course aims to explore Central Italy’s folk weaving traditions through a technical and experimental approach. Participants will work on a versatile rethreading process, exploring weaves and rhythmic variations that are characteristic of the textile gesture.

Throughout the course, various animal and plant-based yarns will be examined, with particular attention to local wool. By analysing their material and chromatic qualities, each participant will select the most suitable wool for their own weave, developing a direct relationship with the material and with the manual practice.

The textiles created will become part of a collective artwork that brings together individual research and restores weaving to its original value as a shared experience and cultural heritage.

Instructor: Master Weaver Angela Giordano

Angela Giordano was born in Argentina and moved to Italy in the 1970s. Since 1973, she has been dedicated to textile craftsmanship. In Paris, she discovered Pre-Columbian and Navajo weaving techniques and began a relationship of mutual esteem and collaboration with teacher Sophie Desrosiers.

Between 1982 and 1983, she began her teaching career through professional courses, museums, and educational centres for people with disabilities and the elderly. She travelled to Gandhian communities in southern India and to Sahrawi refugee camps, where she held training courses in two- and four-shaft weaving.

In 1989, she learned Jacquard weaving techniques at the Fondazione Arte della Seta Lisio, where she continues to teach various Pre-Columbian and shaft weaving techniques.

She was Master Weaver at the Tramandiamo workshop of the Museo dell'Arte della Lana. Today, she continues to cultivate a limitless creativity, leading educational workshops and courses in folk weaving, creative sewing, and embroidery.
