WORKSHOP: “Creating a Nuno Felt Shawl”

The nuno felting workshop is a creative space where fabric and wool merge to create unique, lightweight, and tactile materials.

The term nuno comes from Japanese and means “fabric”: this technique combines merino carded wool fibres with a lightweight fabric, such as wool gauze, through the use of hot water, soap, and friction.

The objectives of the workshop are:

  • To understand the felting process and the principle of fibre cohesion.
  • To learn the different stages of the nuno felting technique (design, fibre layout, wetting, felting, and finishing).
  • To correctly use tools and materials (soap, hot water, roller, bubble wrap, and spray bottle).
  • To create a finished textile piece (e.g. a shawl).

Lecturer Diamantina Palacios

Diamantina Palacios, a Colombian textile designer, laid the foundations of her career with a degree in Textile Design from Universidad de los Andes in 1979. From 1981 to 1984, she shared her expertise by teaching Colour Theory and Textile Composition at the prestigious fashion school Arturo Tejada Cano School of Fashion Design in her hometown. Her career took an international turn in 1986 when she moved to Italy, where she further developed her knowledge of textile arts at the Istituto Statale d'Arte di Firenze.

Her Italian experience grew around two main pillars: conservation and innovation. From 1992 to 2002, she specialised in the restoration of antique carpets and textiles at Laboratorio Faccioli, further enriched by internships with architect Boralevi (1993–1996) focusing on Eastern and European textiles. These skills led to prestigious collaborations, including with the Museo del Tessuto di Prato (2003) and Opera Laboratori Fiorentini for the restoration of museum tapestries (2004).

Alongside her conservation work, she developed pioneering research into sustainability: since 2010, she has collaborated with the University of Florence and the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) on the development of protocols for natural dyeing on wool, silk, and plant fibres. In 2007, she founded the brand Diamantina Palacios, a synthesis of her creative philosophy: in her Florentine atelier, she creates unique handwoven pieces using natural fibres and dyes, experimenting with hybrid techniques such as nuno felting and resist printing. Her work is completed by a line of contemporary textile jewellery made from silk, hemp, and metallic threads, combining artisanal tradition with a contemporary vision.
