Contemporary textile design inspired by historical Jacquard techniques

Representative samples of historical Jacquard techniques such as lampas, tacqueté, samitum are observed and analyzed. The number and function of warp and wefts series are identified, weave superimposition theory introduced and the drafting of complex weave structures practiced.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Representative samples of historical Jacquard techniques such as lampas, tacqueté, samitum are observed and analyzed. The number and function of warp and wefts series are identified, weave superimposition theory introduced, and the drafting of complex weave structures practiced. Each participant will design and produce a ‘virtual sample book’ and a digital weave library, based on the techniques studied, in the computer lab using textile design software and for use with textile CAD software.

Contemporary textile design inspired by historical Jacquard techniques

Teacher: Eva Basile
Observation and analysis of representative samples of historical Jacquard techniques such as lampas, tacqueté, samitum. Identification of the number and function of warp and wefts. Introduction to weave super-imposition theory. Practical exercises in drafting complex weave structures.
In the computer lab, each student uses textile design software to design a ‘virtual sample book’ and and produce  - hand-weaving on a digital Jacquard loom - a digital weave library, based on the techniques studied, for use with CAD software.
PROGRAM

3h     Basics of textile analysis, identification of the constituent elements of a textile, its weave structures and their annotation. (practice)
4h     Overview of traditional and digital systems for design and production of figured textiles: the design, pointpaper, technical colors and their relation to the reading note. Definition of the weaves, simulation, correction, sampling and production hand-woven on a digital Jacquard loom.   (2h theory- 2h practice)
7h      Study and elaboration with digital design systems of textiles with a single warp and weft series: figured tabby, damask. (3 ½h theory – 3 ½h practice)
7h      Weft effects: liseré, lancé and brocade with one or more pattern wefts series. Elaboration of multiple weft effects, continuous and discontinuous using digital systems. (3 ½h theory – 3 ½h practice)
7h      Textiles with more than one warp system and multiple weft series. Taqueté, samite, lampas and their production on digital looms. (3 ½h theory – 3 ½h practice)
4h      Design and production of multiple cloths with digital systems. (2h theory – 2h practice)
3h      Review and discussion. (1h practice-2h theory)

Total hours theory: no. 16 ½                                     Total hours practice: no. 18 ½
