Intensive theoretical/practical seminar: the weave structures are woven using a range of looms and visualization methods, to promote comprehension of the connection between weave annotation, analysis and loom technology. Samples are woven with traditional systems for creating both folk and figured silk textiles from various historical, geographical and cultural contexts.
Participants develop an understanding of the relationship between woven textile artefacts, textile analysis, annotation and drafting, and loom. Introduction to the technology used to design and produce figured wovens at the Lisio Foundation School.PROGRAM
3h Loom technologies from various historical, geographical and cultural contexts:
body-tensioned looms, frame looms, treadle looms (theory)
2h Presentation and comparison of methods of textile annotation and drafting.

4h Use of digital design systems for textile documentation. (2h theory – 2h
practice)
3h Weaving basic structures with pedal or lever-controlled table and floor looms,
and weaving with dobby and Jacquard controlled devices. (practice)
5h Threading-based figured textiles: analysis and drafting by hand and with
digital systems. (1 ½ h theory – 3 ½ h practice)
16h Counted warp figuring devices, heddle sticks, draw-loom, and Jacquard
mechanism used to create weft patterning: self-patterned, extra and brocade
effects. Theory and practice of weft-patterning via textile analysis, and
reconstruction using digital design systems and looms. (2h theory – 14h
practice)
2h Review and discussion. (1h theory – 1h practice)
