TRAINING OBJECTIVES AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES

The objective of the course is to provide students with specific skills in sixteenth-century historical tailoring and pattern making, as well as in-depth historical knowledge of fashion in the 16th century. Students will work on the reconstruction of the garment depicted in Giovan Battista Moroni’s Portrait of a Lady in Red (1556–1560, National Gallery), gaining direct experience of the reconstructive and sartorial methodologies of the period.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to construct historical patterns related to Italian sixteenth-century womenswear. They will have developed sensitivity and specialised knowledge in the reading and selection of fabrics for the creation of Renaissance garments, as well as the ability to articulate and justify their stylistic and design choices in sartorial planning.

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND PROGRAMME

The course, lasting 90 hours, consists of a theoretical-seminar component (30%) and a practical workshop component (70%). In particular, the activity will focus on the acquisition of specialised skills in costume and fashion history, textile history, art history, and historical tailoring.

Theoretical seminars, as well as guided visits of an art-historical nature, will be essential for understanding the activities carried out in the workshop component.

The training pathway includes the following areas of competence:

  1. Tailoring techniques
  2. Textile history (16th century)
  3. Costume history (16th century)
  4. Art history (16th century and Bergamasque painting)
  5. Museology

TRAINING METHODOLOGY

Both theoretical and practical lessons will follow a traditional frontal teaching approach. For each seminar, students are expected to review the indications provided in the individual programmes. Participants will be assigned supplementary readings and exercises aimed at supporting workshop activities. These tasks are essential for the progressive refinement of manual skills and theoretical knowledge.
