2 free places are reserved for residents of Calascio
Location: Council Hall, Municipality of Calascio (AQ)
The participation fee includes:
- Attendance at in-person lessons
- Teaching materials
- Certificate of attendance
The course is part of ISTÓS – “Calascio School for the Specialization in Weaving, Wool and Native Plant Fibres”. With the contribution of the pilot project for cultural, social, and economic regeneration “Rocca Calascio - Luce d'Abruzzo” of the Municipality of Calascio, selected by the Abruzzo Region within the framework of the PNRR measure of the Ministry of Culture (Line A - M1.C3 – Investment 2.1 – “Attractiveness of Villages”), funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
WORKSHOP “Collective Embroidery: Shell or Conch, Writing and Embroidery Workshop”
Only regenerated Abruzzo linen fabrics will be used: vintage handwoven handkerchiefs, cloths, and napkins made from the plant fibre historically cultivated in the region.
The creative process will be structured as follows:
- Woven Memories
Participants choose everyday objects charged with personal meaning, embroidering their impressions and memories onto reclaimed handkerchiefs. - The Art of the Needle
Learning basic embroidery techniques to translate emotions into textile marks. - Evocative Writing
Transforming memories into short stories inspired by the chosen object, shared within the group. - Collective Weave
Extracting textual fragments from the stories to embroider them onto a second handkerchief, creating a single collective artwork. - Final Artwork
The individual handkerchiefs come together into a narrative tapestry, where personal memories become collective heritage through the intertwining of threads and words.
Lecturer Sara Basta
Visual artist based in Rome. She is a lecturer in the Art Therapy course at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma and in the Art Education Department at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia. From 2023 to 2025, she conducted a painting workshop within the SPDC psychiatric ward of San Filippo Neri Hospital in Rome. She has developed projects in Italy and abroad in numerous institutions, including: IUNO Rome; Fondazione Pastificio Cerere Rome; Fondazione Baruchello Rome; MAXXI L’Aquila; Villa Medici Rome; Royal Academy of Spain in Rome; Fondazione A. Fendi Rome; Museo Carlo Bilotti Rome; Manifesta12 Palermo; 54th Venice Biennale; MUMI Museo de las Migraciones Montevideo, Uruguay; Centro Cultural Recoleta Buenos Aires; Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, Missouri, USA; Picture Gallery of Kaunas, Lithuania. She is co-founder of the artistic collective The Glorious Mothers.
