Stupor – The Month of Frederickian Culture
The eighth edition of Federicus 2019, dedicated to the theme <<Li Agi>>, features a rich programme of events. Alongside numerous live performances and processions, this year’s edition includes the extensive cultural programme “Stupor”, curated by the Federicult group: more than 40 events including conferences, exhibitions, and concerts. The Fondazione Arte della Seta Lisio will also take part with a conference entitled “The Pleasures to Wear”, dedicated to Lisio textiles inspired by the medieval period, and with the exhibition “Pleasure for the Eyes”, featuring textiles, jewellery, and costumes that bear witness to the concepts of luxury and beauty during the time of Frederick II.

Federicus – Medieval Festival was created with the aim of enhancing and restoring central importance to the territory of the city of Altamura, the most populated centre of the Alta Murgia area, located on the border with Matera, the UNESCO World Heritage city of the Sassi, and not far from Castel del Monte, another UNESCO site in Puglia and an architectural symbol of the Emperor.
The revival of the medieval town is linked to the figure of one of the most renowned and celebrated men of the Middle Ages: Frederick II built the Romanesque Cathedral, conceiving it as a palatine church, the only one in Puglia constructed by the will of the Emperor.
The historical reenactment of Federicus offers an opportunity to explore the historical period of the Frederickian age through a series of related events, including exhibitions and collective art shows, seminars, and conferences.
The event takes place in the ancient town centre of Altamura, brought to life by processions, markets, games, encampments, performances with musicians, drummers, and flag bearers, featuring both local and national artists, together with film forums, guided tours, theatrical performances, medieval dance courses, and short courses on medieval history.
