The First Level Academic Master in “Textile – Creation of Artistic Fabrics” develops highly qualified technical and expressive skills, enabling students to engage both with graphic design linked to traditional textile techniques and with the more experimental approaches typical of contemporary artistic production. Through hands-on experience with different types of looms, students learn about textile materials (yarns, colours, structures), how to manipulate them, and how to adapt them to their own creative intent. The programme is aimed at graduates holding a First or Second Level degree from Academies of Fine Arts or Universities.

The one-year Master is offered by the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze in collaboration with the Fondazione Arte della Seta Lisio – Florence, with the aim of establishing a centre of excellence in textile design and manufacturing in Italy. Enrolled students will be able to undertake internships and traineeships at companies, textile artisans, fashion design studios, art galleries, museums, and institutions dedicated to textile culture.

ATTENDANCE – Mandatory.

DURATION – The Master in Textile – Creation of Artistic Fabrics lasts one academic year, for a total workload of 1,500 hours corresponding to 60 CFA credits.

QUALIFICATION – Participants who attend at least 80% of teaching activities, obtain all credits required by the study plan, and pass the final examination will be awarded the academic title of First Level Master.

AVAILABLE PLACES AND ENROLMENT – To ensure students can use the looms and all technical equipment provided by the Lisio Foundation, places are limited to ten participants.

SELECTION OF CANDIDATES – If the number of applications exceeds available places, the Academy will carry out a selection process. This may consist of a multiple-choice or open-answer test on topics including art, fashion, and general culture, as well as a motivational interview. The schedule and list of admitted candidates will be published on the Academy’s official notice board.

If a selection test is required, it will take place according to the published timetable. Admission will be granted to candidates ranked highest in the selection list. In case of a tie, preference will be given to the candidate with the higher grade in their academic diploma or degree; if still tied, the younger candidate will prevail.

COST – €3,500

CONTENTS OF THE COURSE MODULES DELIVERED AT THE LISIO FOUNDATION

TEXTILE CULTURE – TEXTILE FIBRES, SPINNING, AND YARN CLASSIFICATION
Theoretical-practical course

Provides knowledge for distinguishing, understanding, and describing the organoleptic properties of fibres, spinning processes, types of yarns and their classification, yarn dyeing treatments, and the study of light reflection/refraction phenomena when interacting with raw materials. Acquisition of technical terminology in both Italian and English.

TEXTILE CULTURE – HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL LOOMS
Theoretical-practical course

Study of the tools used to create basic textile weaves, including the characteristics and functioning of both horizontal and vertical looms.

TEXTILE CULTURE – SIMPLE FABRICS AND THEIR DERIVATIVES, MAIN FINISHING TREATMENTS
Theoretical-practical course

Provides knowledge for recognising different basic weaves and their derivatives, as well as finishing processes applied after weaving. Study of fabric “hand” characteristics in different textiles and of light reflection/refraction phenomena related to weave structures. Acquisition of technical terminology in both Italian and English.

BASIC WEAVING

Practical course

Develops the ability to use basic weaving structures, with or without a loom, experimenting with different materials and techniques to realise a design project.

TAPESTRY HISTORY

Theoretical course

Study of the historical development of tapestry techniques, highlighting the creative potential of this ancient textile practice.

PATTERNED FABRICS

Theoretical-practical course

Study of patterned textile types, including single- or multi-weft and single- or multi-warp structures, with recognition of different techniques and their practical execution.

JACQUARD LOOM
Theoretical course

Introduction to the characteristics and functioning of the Jacquard loom, preparation of designs for punched cards, and study of the related techniques and technologies.

HISTORY OF UPHOLSTERY AND GARMENT FABRICS
Theoretical course

TEXTILE CAD DESIGN

Theoretical-practical course

Creation of artistic woven panels: using computer software, the student develops a design, integrates the technical data required for weaving via a CAD-interfaced loom, and subsequently weaves it on a manual loom.

JACQUARD DESIGN AND WEAVING

Theoretical-practical course

Study and creation of small decorative modules to be translated into woven fabrics produced on a manual loom. Analysis of patterned fabrics such as damasks and brocades, preparation of technical drawings, punching of cards for the Jacquard mechanism, and practical weaving of the works. Study of variations in colour and yarn types.

TAPESTRY WEAVING

Practical course
