"Habiti vaghi et all'antica" | COSTUME

The Baroque theatrical costume and the frantic search for the authenticity of the ancient

curated by Alessio Francesco Palmieri Marinoni

October 1, 2022 at 9:00 p.m.

The Baroque is, without any shadow of a doubt, the fundamental moment in the construction of a new symbolic and vestimentary language in modern Europe.

The shock caused by the Reformation would lead artists to question more and more the meaning of dressing which, through a complex and articulated process, by no means free of obstacles, would see its first results in the definition of the correct vestimentary styles for works with a sacred subject.

Over the course of more than two centuries, the search for the ancient and the authentic would walk, hand in hand, with the desire to rediscover a glorious and, in some ways, fantastic past.
